Commencement – not just for the graduates

School is out and I’ve already got the first sonata under my fingers in some fashion!  The discovery of the slow movement being dedicated to Mahler on the 25th anniversary of his death is a bonus.  Gives one license to think of symphonic voicing, implied romantic storylines wrapped into fabulous, gushy cycles.  All of which Ullmann unabashedly employs even in this earliest of his sonatas.  So which one to add in next?  Would be too pedantic to go in order.   Reading through the others, notice that No. 3 has a set of variations on a Mozart tune.  Looks a bit gnarly, so let’s go for it!
